Morehead City, a prime example of coastal living, is a growing community made vibrant by hosting one of only two North Carolina State ports. The Crystal Coast is considered one of the best locations for wreck diving by the Scuba Diving Magazine.
Morehead City is also home to a lot of Carteret County medical services ranging from family practice to dental and emergency care. Many more services are offered through Carteret General Hospital located in Morehead City.
The Crystal Coast's rich past is presented at the History Place (The Carteret County Historical Society) in downtown Morehead City. Included in the exhibits are little pieces of time: a general store, early schoolroom, Victorian parlor, Native American artifacts, vintage clothing, military memorabilia and artwork, and period furniture. You will see wonderful things such as the History of Shrimp Boats, an Antique Doll Collection, The History of Civil War Weapons and the Tuscarora Indians. Also on display is the carriage in which our local famous female Confederate spy, Emeline Pigott rode in when captured.
The Jack Spencer Goodwin Library holds more that 6,000 publications and Carteret County history photo file. The Civil War collections are particularly noteworthy. The giftstore features publications about the Civil War, black history, pirates, cookbooks, poetry, nautical ornaments, jewelry, pottery, Civil War collectibles and also children's items. There is also a Tearoom and a Cafe inside, so you may enjoy a light lunch.
