Beaufort is North Carolina's third oldest town and will charm you with all the history and nostalgia of small town America as soon as you cross the Graydon Paul Drawbridge. The population currently stands at around 4000 and serves as the seat of Carteret County. It was founded in 1709 and incorporated in 1722. It was originally named after Henry Somerset, Duke of Beaufort. Before that is was called Fish Towne, which was very appropriate due to the fact that fishing was and still is a productive industry. Beaufort's captivating history is founded on the sea which includes famous pirates and patriots. Blackbeard the Pirate favored Beaufort as his home port of call. The Queen Anne's Revenge, Blackbeard's flagship, lies underwater about three miles offshore. Artifacts from the Revenge are on display at the North Carolina Maritime Museum. Many historic homes abound on the tree-lined streets of Beaufort's famous waterfront area. Brilliant views of international yachts, wild ponies on Carrot Island, fine restaurants, charter boats, and small shops with superior artisans and craftsmen enhance Beaufort's coastal allure.

The Beaufort Historic Site invites you to take a stroll back in time with ongoing programs and tours. Some exceptional events of Beaufort include:

The North Carolina Maritime Museum

If you are intrigued by the sea or pirates, then the North Carolina Maritime Museum is a must see attraction. Located at 315 Front Street in Historic Beaufort, you may tour at your own leisure, browsing the history of the US Lifesaving Service, whaling on the coast, piracy, coastal species of the sea and land and too many things to mention. Don't forget the museum's research library or gift shop!

Across the street you will find the Harvey W. Smith Watercraft Center house, a working boat and model shop. The Wooden Boat Show is in May and is a tribute to the vessels being restored and constructed in this shop.

Another great reason to stop in Beaufort is the Rachel Carson Reserve, located across Taylor's Creek from the Beaufort Waterfront. The Reserve is a part of the North Carolina National Estuarine Research Reserve. It is an awe-inspiring, stunning area in a series of islands referred to by the locals as Bird Shoal or Carrot Island. If you stand on the Beaufort Waterfront, you maybe able to catch a glimpse of the Island ponies along the shore. The reserve is a great place for hiking, shelling and exploring the natural and human processes that affect coastal areas. It is comprised of salt marshes, tidal flats, eelgrass beds and salty flats. You can swim, beach comb, and sunbathe and it is only accessed by boat. Call 252-728-2170 for details and information about this area.
